The prize is awarded for unpublished shorter translations of up to 20,000 words, or for unpublished excerpts of up to 20,000 words of a longer work. 2017 prize winners were Nina Cornyetz for "Tale of the Enchanted Sword" (妖剣記聞, by Izumi Kyōka 1920) and Erin Brightwell "The Torrent" (奔流, by Taiwanese writer Wang Chang-xiong, 王昶雄, also known by his Japanese name, Ō Chōyū, 1943).
