11:00-11:30 h: Contending Visions of the Americas: Regional Public Policies of Brazil, the United States, and Venezuela.

There are three contending models of capitalism in the Americas today: the (neo)liberal market capitalism of the United States, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, and Chile; the radical populism of Venezuela, Cuba, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Nicaragua; and the capitalist developmentalism of Brazil, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Uruguay, and Argentina. Among each of the groups of states representing each of the three varieties of capitalism is at least one would-be-leader state that is attempting to export its understanding of social and economic relations to its regional neighbors.

Sybil Rhodes. Profesora y Secretaria Académica, Departamento de Ciencias Políticas y Relaciones Internacionales, UCEMA.

11:30-12:00 h: The Dynamics of International Trade: Binding Overhang, Uncertainty, and Leader Change.

An important theme in the analysis of interstate relations is uncertainty. The dynamics of cooperation change if players are uncertain about the costs and benefits of cooperation. This issue has been addressed as the analysis of flexibility in international agreements. While there is a general agreement on the fact that flexibility enhances the stability of cooperative regimes, the overall effect of flexibility on average levels of cooperation is ambiguous.

Eric Arias. Estudiante de doctorado, Department of Politics, New York University.

12:00-12:30 h: Between Confrontation and Assimilation: China and the Fragmentation of Global Financial Governance.

This article explains China’s multilateral approach towards regional and global financial institutions in the early twenty-first century. Challenging the dichotomous views of ‘eventual assimilation’ and ‘systemic conflict’, the article argues that China’s strategic behavior suggests neither one-way assimilation into an American-centered liberal order nor a collision course with the United States and its Group of Seven (G-7) allies.
Injoo Sohn. Assistant Professor, Politics and Public Administration Department, University of Hong Kong.
