Special events at the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) Annual Conference, San Diego, March 21-24, 2013
We expect this year's AAS conference to be among the largest in the
Association's history. There are 374 panel sessions covering a broad
range of academic disciplines, countries and regions of Asia.
Keynote addresses are free and open to the public:
* A keynote address by Dr. Tamotsu Aoki, Director General, The
National Art Center, Tokyo, entitled, "The Cultures of Hybridism:
Toward a Contemporary East Asia Cultural Community." (Thursday,
March 21st , 6 p.m., Manchester Ballroom D-I)
* A keynote address by Zainah Anwar, Director, Musawah, a global
movement for equality and justice in the Muslim family,
entitled, "What Islam, Whose Islam: The Struggle for Women's
Right to Equality and Justice in Muslim Contexts." (Saturday,
March 23rd , 7:15 p.m., Manchester Ballroom D-I)
Other highlights in the Program include:
* A special panel on "Digital Debates and Digital Divides: How the
Web has Changed Politics in and Coverage of Asia"
(Friday, March 22nd, 10:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m., Manchester
Ballroom A) moderated by Jeff Wasserstrom, Editor, The Journal
of Asian Studies, and Professor of History, UC-Irvine.
Participants include:
* Kaiser Kuo, Director of International Communications for Baidu,
China's largest search engine. Kaiser has lived in China for
nearly 17 years. He was formerly China Bureau Chief for Red
Herring magazine, and hosts the Sinica Podcast, a weekly
discussion of current affairs in China. He was a founding member
of Tang Dynasty, China's first and most successful heavy metal
band.
* Emma Larkin, Freelance Writer, Bangkok; author of Finding George
Orwell in Burma. She lives in Bangkok and is currently
completing a book on Thailand.
* Nguyen Giang, Editor, East Asia Hub and Vietnamese Service, BBC
World Service/London.
* Angilee Shah, Journalist, Public Radio International, working
in digital media on global health and immigration.
* A special panel on "Obama's Asia Pivot: The Response from the
Region and Future Challenges" (Saturday, March 23rd, 2013,
10:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m., Manchester Ballroom A) moderated by Ted
Bestor, Harvard University and AAS President.
Participants include:
* Pallavi Aiyar, Journalist and Author. She was the Beijing
bureau chief for The Hindu, then reported on Europe's
relationship with China and India from Brussels. She is
currently based in Jakarta.
* Victor Cha, Senior Adviser and Korea Chair, Center for
Strategic and International Studies, and Professor of
Government, Georgetown University.
* Will Dobson, Politics and Foreign Affairs Editor,
Slate.com, and the author of The Dictator's Learning Curve:
Inside the Global Battle for Democracy.
* Nguyen Giang, Editor, East Asia Hub and Vietnamese Service,
BBC World. Service/London.
* Sheila Smith, Senior Fellow for Japan Studies, Council on
