Asia Society honored the iconic
architect I.M.
Pei with an Asia Game Changer lifetime achievement
award on Thursday in a dinner ceremony that also recognized the achievements
of nine other extraordinary individuals: Afghan musician Ahmad Sarmast,
Syrian education advocate Muzoon
Almellehan, Indonesian piano prodigy Joey Alexander,
Iraqi cellist Karim
Wasfi, Australian engineer Marita Cheng,
Bangladeshi social entrepreneur Durreen Shahnaz, Chinese film
director Zhang
Yimou, Nepalese eye surgeon Sanduk Ruit,
and Korean music impresario Soo-Man
Lee.

On Wednesday, current and former
Asia Society leaders came together in New York to discuss the
organization’s 60th anniversary, offering both reflections on the
past and aspirations for the future. Though Asia Society now boasts
12 centers around the world and a robust array of programs and
initiatives, President Emeritus Robert Oxnam noted that its
founder, John
D. Rockefeller 3rd, “was making a bet on the future”
was he established the organization.
