The Silk Road House

The Silk Road House presents: "THE SALTMEN OF TIBET" German filmmaker, director and writer Ulrike Koch is a sinologist (her previous film dealt with Chinese medicine) who made this 1997 documentary on digital video with a small crew in northern Tibet. She also worked on the Bernardo Bertolucci films ''The Last Emperor'' and ''Little Buddha.'' For this Swiss-German production, she sneaked cameras into Changtang region in order to film four men and 160 yak in a 2,000-year-old ritual -- the annual spring pilgrimage to gather raw salt at remote lakes, a three-month Himalayan trek. The wind is a constant presence, and so are the looming, snow-covered peaks. This nomadic tribe has been collecting salt to buy barley in the same way since ages. All is ritualized: Margen cooks, Pargen prepares burnt offerings and distributes meat, Zopon cares for the caravan of yaks, Bopsa bends his strong back to arduous work. To each other they speak the secret language of saltmen. Camping along the way, they engage in prayers, talk, and songs. The saltmen are a fraternity, and there are initiation rites. The men play assigned roles: “mother,'' `”father'' and “novice,'' and we gather that there must always be a novice to reinforce the idea of seeing familiar things as if for the first time. The sounds we hear are the men chanting, bells and the deep foghorn blasts of resonant instruments. Punctuating the movie are excerpts from the story of King Gesar of Ling, a national Tibetan epic, hauntingly sung by an unidentified female shaman who is a member of the tribe.

Director of photography, Pio Corradi; music by Stefan Wulff and Frank Wulff; produced by Christophe Bicker and Knut Winkler; released by Zeitgeist Films. Stars: Margen (Old Mother), Pargen (Old Father), Zopon (Lord of the Animals). Language -- in Tibetan, with English subtitles. Running time: 110 minutes. The screening will be introduced and commented on by Alma Kunanbaeva.

SADF condemns vehemently the new terror attack against India

Paulo Casaca, the executive director of South Asia Democratic Forum, in view of the triple blast that exploded in Mumbai at 7 PM local time, conveyed his condolences to the relatives of the fatally injured as well as to the injured. He expresses full solidarity with the Indian authorities and vehemently condemns this new terror attack against India, its perpetrators and all those who supported them.

For SADF any terrorist attack against human race is an attack against humanity.

Yesterday, SADF was working on the main conclusions of the conference together held with the Inter-University Centre for terrorism studies which was hosted by MEP Alexander Alvaro. The Conference was held In light of Bin Laden’s killing in Pakistan, the new terror attack unfortunately proved correct its most important finding: “The elimination of Bin Laden or the sideling of Al-Qa’ida did not stop the likelihood of the escalation of terrorism”.

SADF reminds that no measures are yet taken against the organisations and their leaders that have been identified as the perpetrators and masterminds of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks rampantly working in their safe havens such as Pakistan.

SADF believes terrorism to be appalling and intolerable act of violence. It condemns those who use these despicable means to achieve these goals. Last but not the least, SADF urges international community not to support such weeds who are targeting innocent people for their vested interest.

South Korea army, university to start cyberdefense major

The South Korean military and Korea University have signed an agreement to set up a cyberdefense program aimed specifically at training students in cyber warfare to combat virtual threats from North Korea.
The four-year cyberdefense major will be offered at Korea University's Graduate School of Information Security starting next year and will accept 30 undergraduates, according to a report by the country's English daily Korea Herald.
The army will provide four-year scholarships to students under the program who, upon graduation, will join the armed forces as military officers specializing in various cyber warfare units for seven years.
Training related to cyber warfare tactics, strategies, deciphering enemy codes, cryptography and cyber psychology will be part of the course curriculum to prepare students as "cyber warriors that we need in the military", said General Kim Sang-ki, who is army chief of staff, in the report.
Korea University's president, Kim Byung-chul, added: "We are very happy that with the support from the army, we can educate students who can contribute to strengthening our national security."
A separate report by news agency AFP said South Korea's plans to build up a cyber army is a response to growing virtual threats from its Northern neighbor.
South Korean authorities claimed North Korea was behind the system crash that brought down the former's biggest banking network, National Agricultural Cooperative Federation or Nonghyup, and rendered various customer services unavailable for several days. North Korea had denied the allegations.
"We seek to nurture warriors to fight in cyber warfare amid growing cyberterror threats from North Korea and to secure a stable supply of specialists," an army spokesperson said in a statement to AFP.
Security experts told ZDNet Asia earlier this month that cyber threats post a "real danger" to countries, and advised governments to take action to safeguard their infrastructure and information systems.
