Experimental Economics and Spontaneous Order

Turin (Italy), October 5-6, 2011Experimental Economics and Spontaneous OrderSeminar for Ph.D. students directed by Professor Vernon L. SmithIBL (Istituto Bruno Leoni), in co-operation with the Department of Economic and Financial Sciences “Giuseppe Prato” of the University of Turin and CIPESS (Centro Interuniversitario di Economia e Psicologia Sperimentali e Simulative), organizes in Turin a Seminar on “Experimental Economics and the Spontaneous Order”, directed by Professor Vernon L. Smith (Chapman University) and reserved to graduate students.
Professor Smith is the “father” of an important school of scholars using experimental methods to address economic questions. The notion that underpins this new branch of economics is that experiments can help to understand how economic agents behave. In a very formal environment, researchers create artificial monetary incentives to help understand why markets and other exchange systems work. In particular Professor Smith used experimental economics to deal with the spontaneous emergence of social norms.
The seminar will be held at the Department of Economic and Financial Sciences “Giuseppe Prato” of the University of Turin (Corso Unione Sovietica, 218). The Seminar will be conducted by Prof. Vernon Smith, Prof. Bart Wilson and Prof. David Porter (both from Chapman University). Participants to the two-days seminar are required to read a selection of texts as a necessary preparation to the common work. Materials will be provided to the participants by IBL in electronic form upon selection.
The number of participants is restricted to 20 students. Applicants must be under 30.Grants may be available—at the discretion of the selecting committee—to students that will also be participating to the Mises Seminar in Sestri Levante, covering travel and lodging in Turin.
The participation fee is € 250 (this also applies to any beneficiary of the above-mentioned grants).
