CFP> Conference: Buddhist Approaches to Hospice Care and Life Education

Dear colleagues,

Juequn Center for the Studies of Humanistic Buddhism 覺群人間佛教研究中心, with the support of Shanghai Jade Buddha Temple 上海玉佛禪寺, invites paper proposals for the “International Conference on Buddhist Approaches To Hospice Care And Life Education” to be held on November 3rd to 4th, 2018, Shanghai, China.

Featured Panels
The Conference is unique in its multidisciplinary approach to Life and Death Studies. It will feature panels on the following topics, but are not limited to:

1) Buddhist Insights into Life and Death (doctrinal studies and case studies in different traditions);
2) Views of Life and Death in Chinese and/or Western Philosophy;
3) Medical Science and Palliative Care (including case studies from hospice care wards);
4) Promoting Life and Death Studies in Mainland China (with a joint discussion by scholars from both Mainland China and Taiwan);
5) Life Education and Elderly Care Service; etc.

Application Deadline
All conference participants are by invitation. Please send abstracts of approximately 200 words and a brief biographical note to pangshiying@yufotemple.com or wangfengshuo@yufotemple.com by July 20, 2018.

Shanghai Jade Buddha Temple is one of the three major temples in Shanghai, China. It is working with two local hospitals this year, sending Buddhist volunteers to practice palliative care and provide spiritual service when necessary. This long-term project, known as "Project on Life Care and Education," is supported by local government and multiple religious foundations in Shanghai.

Pali Advanced Reading Course

This August, Prof. Richard Gombrich will run another Pali Advanced Reading course at Oxford University.
The dates for this course are as follows: arrive Tuesday evening, 14th August, depart Thursday morning 23rd August. There will be no class on Sunday 19th August.
This course will mainly consist of reading texts together in class.
As in previous years, students on the course will be housed in Clive Booth Student Village, which is owned by Oxford Brookes University.  Accommodation costs for the entire course come to £240. The accommodation block is about 10 mins walk from the lecture room that we shall be using.  
The cost of the course, excluding the accommodation, will be £360 (covering lecture room hire and expenses).
Only twelve pupils will be accepted for the course.   
Access to the Pali-English Dictionary is essential. Access to Warder’s Introduction to Pali and Geiger’s grammar is desirable (a few copies will be supplied in the classroom).

Dear Bertram Liyanage,
Sorry for this delayed reply, but, if your goal is just to begin to read classical Buddhist texts in Tibetan, then your best bet is probably Stephen Hodge, An Introduction to Classical Tibetan, which focuses more closely on the language of canonical texts than do other available works in English. If you are at ease with German, however, I would recommend the works by Michael Hahn (Lehrbuch der klassischen tibetischen Schriftsprache) or Peter Schwieger (Handbuch zur Grammatik der klassischen tibetischen Schriftsprache).
