Experimental Economics and Spontaneous Order

Turin (Italy), October 5-6, 2011Experimental Economics and Spontaneous OrderSeminar for Ph.D. students directed by Professor Vernon L. SmithIBL (Istituto Bruno Leoni), in co-operation with the Department of Economic and Financial Sciences “Giuseppe Prato” of the University of Turin and CIPESS (Centro Interuniversitario di Economia e Psicologia Sperimentali e Simulative), organizes in Turin a Seminar on “Experimental Economics and the Spontaneous Order”, directed by Professor Vernon L. Smith (Chapman University) and reserved to graduate students.
Professor Smith is the “father” of an important school of scholars using experimental methods to address economic questions. The notion that underpins this new branch of economics is that experiments can help to understand how economic agents behave. In a very formal environment, researchers create artificial monetary incentives to help understand why markets and other exchange systems work. In particular Professor Smith used experimental economics to deal with the spontaneous emergence of social norms.
The seminar will be held at the Department of Economic and Financial Sciences “Giuseppe Prato” of the University of Turin (Corso Unione Sovietica, 218). The Seminar will be conducted by Prof. Vernon Smith, Prof. Bart Wilson and Prof. David Porter (both from Chapman University). Participants to the two-days seminar are required to read a selection of texts as a necessary preparation to the common work. Materials will be provided to the participants by IBL in electronic form upon selection.
The number of participants is restricted to 20 students. Applicants must be under 30.Grants may be available—at the discretion of the selecting committee—to students that will also be participating to the Mises Seminar in Sestri Levante, covering travel and lodging in Turin.
The participation fee is € 250 (this also applies to any beneficiary of the above-mentioned grants).
Selective participation grants will be available at the discretion of organizers, for deserving studentsCandidates interested to apply for participating in this seminar should send their curriculum vitae (including participation to other relevant meetings, seminars, etc) to Carlo Lottieri, at carlo.lottieri@brunoleoni.it.
Applicants should also list their publications, if any, and attach a short cover letter explaining the reason of her interest in participating in the seminar.
Priority for acceptance to the Seminar will be given to participants to the Mises Seminar 2011 (Sestri Levante, 7-8 October 2011).The deadline for the application is July 31, 2011.
The applications will be evaluated by a commission composed by IBL scholars.
The judgment of the commission is unappealable.

The Voices of Ten Million: Anti-Nuclear Petition Movement Launched in Japan 千万人の声−−反原子力陳情運動、日本で始まる

A group of Japan’s most prominent public intellectuals have launched a movement to amass ten million signatures calling for an end to Japanese nuclear power. The group, which includes Uchihashi Katsuto, Ooe Kenzaburo, Ochiai, Kamata Satoshi, Sakamoto Ryuichi, Sawachi Hisae, Setouchi Jakucho, Tsujii Takashi and Tsurumi Shunsuke, also plan a nationwide series of protests on September 11, the six month anniversary of the tsunami and the beginning of the Fukushima crisis.

Affected by the earthquake on 11th March, the Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant of TEPCO is suffering meltdown, the worst possible situation, in its reactors number 1 to3.

This has become an unparalleled disaster, where high level radioactive materials have been released, following hydrogen explosions and the damages to the reactor buildings, into sea water, air and soil, contaminating the environment.

Even two months after the earthquake, the reactors show no sign of coming back to control and the situation continues to be extremely unstable. It is feared that there would be immeasurable effects on the health and lives of not only the local residents and the workers at the power plant but also the future children yet to be born.

We have always been aware that humans cannot live with nuclear. We are deeply regretting that even though we knew this fact, our protesting voices and actions against nuclear energy have been far too weak.

We are determined to take actions for a “peaceful and sustainable society”, reconsidering our lifestyles that exploit nature and waste limitless energy, and focusing on natural energy.

For that purpose, we set the following goals:
1. Cancellation of construction plans for new nuclear power plants
2. Planned termination of existing nuclear power plants, including the Hamaoka nuclear power plant.
3. Abolition of “Monju” and nuclear reprocessing plants which use plutonium, the most dangerous radioactive material. We will achieve these goals in order to save our own lives, and fulfill our responsibilities to the future children.

We will hold the “Goodbye to Nuclear Power Plants” Rally as follows. Please join with your friends and families.

Date: September 19th, 2011, Starting at 13:00Place: Meiji Park, Tokyo (Five minutes walk from JR Sendagaya station, two minutes walk from metro Oedo line Kokuritsu Kyogijo station (Exit E25)Expected number of participants: 50,000(There will also be a parade after the rally.)
