The Vitality of Tradition: Appropriation of Aldar Köse (the trickster) in a
Kazakh Folktale to Represent 'The New Kazakh'
Aldar Köse (lit. `Beardless Cheater') is a hero-trickster character present in the oral traditions and literature of Kazakhs, Karakalpaks, Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, Turkmen, and Tajiks. He uses his cunning wit and eloquence to defeat the greed and laziness of the rich, powerful, and pompous. Readers not only delight in, but also vicariously share in his victories.
Our guest will compare and contrast two versions of the same Kazakh folktale: "Aldar Köse and the Devils". One recent version was modified to depict the "New Kazakhs". Aldar Köse goes from representing, acting in the stead of gentle Kazakhs, to presenting the Kazakhs as cunning like himself.
Erik Aasland received his Ph.D. from Fuller Graduate School of Intercultural Studies in Pasadena, CA. He has done invited talks at USC and UCSD where he spoke in particular about proverbs ("How I got Hooked and What I have Done About It" and "Kazakh-speaking Students' Refractions of `Community' by Means of Kazakh Proverbs"). From 2006-2011 he carried out field research concerning Kazakh proverbs, folktales and oral traditions, developing relationships with such distinguished scholars as Academic Äbduäli Qaidar of the Kazakhstan Academy of Sciences. He also taught at Suleyman Demirel University in Almaty, Kazakhstan. He specializes in cognitive poetic and language ideological analysis of Kazakh oral tradition. His personal webpage is: http://sdu-kz.academia.edu/ErikAasland.
The event will take place at SRH on Saturday, June 8, at 5-7pm.
Silk Road House, 1944 University Ave., Berkeley, CA 94705 (between Milvia & Martin Luther King; enter by side door in passageway under black Zabu Zabu awning); e-mail: silkroadhouse@yahoo.com; website: www.silkroadhouse.org; tel.: 510-981-0700.

Journal of the Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies (vol. 4) (Kono)
Dear Colleagues
We are pleased to announce the publication of the fourth issue of the Journal of the Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies. We enclose a section of the Editorial, together with the table of contents.
**From the Editorial**
Here I wish to draw particular attention to three contributions, all of which say something new and important, making real additions to our knowledge of Buddhism. I think that any reader can see for themselves that “The Silent Mentors of Tzu Chi” is a remarkable article. It is remarkable firstly in being both a primary and a secondary source... the whole is further enhanced by the comments of the author, himself a prominent member of Tzu Chi. Rey’s article is uplifting. That by Suren Rāghavan is deeply depressing. Here we overlap with journalism – and Suren has indeed worked as a journalist – for he is recording the activities of a new movement which 3 months ago, when he started writing, hardly anyone outside Sri Lanka had heard of, while now more news, much of it lurid, is appearing on the Internet every day. But his article is far from ephemeral. He adds to his report of ongoing events a profound analysis of their background and current context, leading to a chilling warning of where they seem to be heading. The article by Brett Shults could hardly be more different, for it deals in painstaking detail with facts which have been available for over two thousand years – but not adequately understood.

Call for Papers
*Buddhist Meditation: Tradition and Transformation*
2013 Buddhist Studies Graduate Conference at the University of Virginia
September 13-15, 2013
The Buddhist Studies Group at the University of Virginia is pleased to
announce an interdisciplinary graduate student conference to be hosted on
the UVa Grounds in Charlottesville, VA on September 13-15, 2013 on the
theme of "Buddhist Meditation: Tradition and Transformation." The
conference will include panels and paper presentations by graduate students
from across North America and lectures by a number of the world’s foremost
Buddhist Studies scholars (lineup TBA). This conference is designed to be a
collaborative forum in which young scholars can test new approaches, bridge
disciplines in creative ways, and expand the scope of sources that we bring
to our studies.
*Call for Paper Proposals*
Along the lines of this year’s theme, we are looking for paper proposals
from students currently enrolled in M.A. or Ph.D. programs - not only in
Buddhist Studies, but also in other disciplines, including sociology,
anthropology, and history - that speak directly to the study of Buddhist
meditation. The papers selected for presentation will be organized into
panels, each chaired by a faculty respondent. Presentations will not exceed
twenty minutes.
We strongly encourage proposals that stretch received boundaries and
challenge the way we think about and study Buddhist Meditation in its many
forms and contexts. We encourage papers that approach Buddhist meditation
from a diverse range of methodological approaches - literary, historic,
ethnographic, sociological, political, and educational/pedagogical, to name
a few.
We are particularly interested in the following topics:
- Problems in the *historical study* of Buddhist meditation.
- Innovative *Interdisciplinary* investigations into contemplative
practice in Buddhist societies (e.g.: historically-informed ethnography)
- How *the body* has been conceptualized and represented within specific
Buddhist contemplative systems
- The role of *creativity and innovation* vis-à-vis lineage and
“tradition.”
- *Therapeutic* and instrumental* (vs. soteriological) applications of
Buddhist meditation *in Buddhist societies*.
- Institutional and pedagogical frameworks.
- The role of *the literary* in Buddhist meditation traditions (e.g.:
biographical literature, meditation manuals, philosophical literature, etc)
Paper Proposal Submission Guidelines
Please submit an abstract of your paper of *not more than 500 words*,
along with your name, university and department affiliation, and a brief
bio, to gradbuddhismconf2013@gmail.com by *June 15, 2013.* You will be
notified by the end of June of the status of your proposal, after which we
will publish a detailed schedule of the conference.
University of Virginia may potentially be able to provide funding to cover
the costs of lodging and meals for students presenting papers. Travel
funds, however, should be obtained from the students' home institutions or
other sources. We also warmly welcome and encourage non-presenting students
to attend at their own cost. Regrettably, we cannot provide letters of
invitation to international observers for visa purposes because we are not
equipped to take legal responsibility for international observers.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of the
conference organizers:

Construction work in Astana and the performed state
State Building(s): Construction work in Astana and the performed
state
This talk will discuss from a particular angle Kazakhstan's 1998 capital relocation to Astana (previously known as Tselinograd and Aqmola) and the construction boom that followed from around 2000.
Our guest will offer an ethnographic study of the labor of constructing a new cityscape and the process of state-building which that labor quite literally represents. The specific focus will be on the experiences of several individuals who moved to Astana to participate in its development and thus pursue opportunities for better lives and a renewed sense of meaningful subjective agency. These personal narratives will help examine official ideology and broader patterns of social and political transformation. In sum, this talk will interrogate the relationships between the state, materiality, and political subjectivity. How is the state encountered and produced through built forms and the process of construction? How do citizens interact with official representations and attributed meanings of building work, and what is their role in constructing and maintaining the state? How are citizen subjectivities shaped in relation to the state and construction? And more generally, why is it
that the materiality of built forms provides such a powerful idiom for articulating the state, both affirmatively and critically? This talk opens the door to a larger collaborative project on the anthropology of politics in Central Asia.
Mateusz Laszczkowski is a Wayne Vucinich Visiting Scholar at the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies, Stanford University. He received his PhD in social anthropology from Martin Luther University, Halle-Wittenberg, Germany. His research focuses on politics of space and place and the entanglements of architectural and social change in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.
The event will take place at SRH on Saturday May 18, at 5-7pm.

Institute of Buddhist Studies and Harvard Divinity School
The Institute of Buddhist Studies and Harvard Divinity School present Dharma at Times of Need
The Interface of Chaplaincy and Ministry
Fundamental to the teachings of Buddhism is a description of the human condition as one of suffering, frustration and disappointment. A deep understanding of this condition is the necessary step toward living with and through that actuality, especially when we are confronted by that actuality in its starkest terms - the death of a loved one, a terminal illness, loss of hope, anguish.
This two day symposium will explore the ways that engaging the insights of the Dharma can benefit people at the times of greatest suffering, frustration and disappointment, and the role of minister and chaplain in assisting others at and through those times of need.
