It is with deep sadness that I convey to you the unfortunate news of the passing
away of Professor Jikido Takasaki.
Professor Takasaki was professor
emeritus of The University of Tokyo and the former president and professor
emeritus of Tsurumi University. He was also the former president of the
International Association of Buddhist Studies as well as the former president of
International Congress of Asian and North African Studies (ICANAS).
He
was awarded Japan Academy imperial book award for his watershed work _Nyoraizō
shisō no keisei_ ("The Formation of Tathāgatagarbha Thought" ; Shunjūsha, 1974),
and was internationally recognized as a leader in the study of Buddhist thought,
especially in the area of Tathāgatagarbha and Buddha-nature.
