Kashmir's Contested
Pasts: Narratives, Sacred Geographies, and the Historical Imagination, by
Chitralekha Zutshi
Dear Colleagues:
I am pleased to announce the publication of my new book on Kashmir's
history and historical imagination:
*/Kashmir's Contested Pasts: Narratives, Sacred Geographies, and the
Historical Imagination/, by Chitralekha Zutshi (New Delhi: Oxford
University Press, 2014, 361pp., ISBN 0-19-945067-6; 978-0199450671)*
/Kashmir’s Contested Pasts/ is an extended chronicle of the
historical examination in Kashmir. It explores multiple ideas of
Kashmir and varied ideas of history as they were articulated in
tandem within Kashmir’s multilingual narrative tradition. Contrary
to the notion that the Indian Subcontinent did not produce
histories, the book uncovers the production, circulation, and
consumption of a vibrant regional tradition of historical
composition in its textual, oral, and performance forms from the
late sixteenth century to the present. The book thus offers a
historically grounded reflection on the historical memories,
narrative practices, and institutional contexts that have informed
imaginings of Kashmir and its past, and explores the challenges
posed to these ideas in Kashmiri political culture today.
