The 5th International Ganhwa Seon
Conference and the Subul Scholarly AwardsThe International Seon Center at Dongguk University (Seoul, South Korea) and the Institute for the Study of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism at Dongguk University invite papers for the 5th International Ganhwa Seon Conference and the 1st Subul Scholarly Awards, as follows. We ask for your vigorous participation.
Ⅰ. The 5th International Ganhwa Seon Conference:
Paper Presentations and Meditation Retreat, June 27, 2017 – July 5, 2017
1. International Conference on Ganhwa Seon
1. Date: June 27-28, 2017
2. Venue: Dongguk University
3. Topic: Seon (Chan, Zen) Buddhism: New Scholarly Perspectives
Papers are solicited on the following topics: (1)
the principles and practices of Seon (Chan/Zen) Buddhism; (2) the social,
historical and cultural dimensions of Seon Buddhism; and (3) comparative
perspectives on Seon Buddhism. Seon Buddhism is broadly defined and includes:
Patriarchal Seon (祖師禪), Ganhwa Seon (看話禪), Seon of Silent Illumination (黙照禪),
Chanting Seon (念佛禪), Seon tradition in Tiantai Buddhism and Tibetan
Nyingma school.
4. Paper Style Guideline:

Language: English (preferred), Korean, or
Chinese
2.

The length of the paper: no more than 10,000
words for English and Chinese (including footnotes and references), or 100-120
square manuscript pages with 200 characters of Korean (including footnotes and
references).

The deadline for submitting complete papers:
February 28, 2017.

Notification of accepted papers: April 10, 2017.

We enthusiastically encourage the participation
of PhD students and junior scholars.
·
We will accept about 15 papers, and selected
scholars will be provided with round-trip economy airfare to Seoul and hotel
accommodations. Papers have already been published or scheduled for publication
are not eligible to be submitted.
2. Ganhwa Seon Retreat
1.
Date: June 29, 2017 – July 4, 2017
2.
Venue: Baekdamsa Monastery (Gangwon Province,
Korea)
3.
Teacher: Seon Master Subul Seunim, director of
Dongguk University International Seon Center
4.
Participants: Professors, lecturers, and PhD
students; and professional meditation teachers and advanced meditation students
in Buddhist or other religious traditions
5.
Number of participants: A maximum of 30
6.
Retreatants will be provided with hotel
accommodations in Seoul on June 27th and 28th, with shared lodging. In-country
expenses, including accommodations, domestic transportation between Seoul and
Baekdamsa and for the return trip to Seoul, and room and board during the
retreat and during the following pilgrimage, will be provided. Airfare to Korea
is the responsibility of the retreatants.
3. Pilgrimage to Traditional Seon Monasteries and Discussions with Seon Masters (Tentative)
1.
Date: July 4th –July 5th, 2017
2.
Conversations with Seon Masters Seol-jeong
(Spiritual Patriarch of Sudeoksa Monastery) and Seon Master Jeong-myeong (Head
Seon Monk of Bongamsa Monastery)
3.
Places to be visited: Sudeoksa and Bongamsa
4.
All transportation to these monasteries and for
the return trip to Seoul on July 4th will be provided, along with room and
board in shared accommodations during the pilgrimage and on the return date in
Seoul.
Ⅱ. The 1st Subul
Scholarly Awards, Call for Applications
1. Topic: Ganhwa Seon
Research topic must be related to Ganhwa Seon,
including its theories, principles, practice techniques, philosophy,
socialization, application, and comparative relationship to other traditions or
practices.
2. Award categories and prizes:
1.
Grand Prize: Award of $10,000 US dollars to one
winner
2.
Outstanding Research Award: Award of $5,000 US
dollars to one winner
3.
Inspiring Research Award: Two awards of $2,500
US dollars each to two winners

2.

published or scheduled for publication are not eligible to be submitted.

Winners of the Subul Scholarly Awards must
present their papers at the 5th International Conference on Ganhwa Seon
(roundtrip airfare, hotel accommodations will be provided). Papers will be
published in an anthology.
