Kim and Trump Keep Fire and Fury Burning

North Korea detonated a nuclear weapon underground early Sunday morning, demonstrating both its destructive power as well as its defiance of the international community. In this, North Korea’s sixth nuclear test, the blast’s power exceeded – by up to seven times, according to reports – that of the nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. The U.S. Takes the Fight to ISIS on the Cyber Battlefield

No terrorist organization has capitalized on networked technology more than ISIS, both for recruitment messaging and commanding fighters on the ground. ISIS commanders in Iraq and Syria use networked-devices like phones and tablets to maneuver their ranks through urban combat, and as the terrorist organization loses its footing in Syria, its focus will shift further to global outreach, recruiting those vulnerable to its messaging and inspiring them to violence. U.S. Cyber Command has become an integral part of the fight against the terrorist organization, disrupting command and control networks and removing ISIS content online. The Cipher Brief delves into how effective cyber warfare has been against the group.

Food Insecurity: the Conflict Driver of the Future

The United States is confronted with security challenges on a daily basis, from unending terrorist attacks, widening political chasms, and adversary nation-states positioning themselves on the geopolitical and global economic stages. But behind the curtain of all of these problems resides a potentially devastating long-term issue that demands attention: global food insecurity as both a consequence and driver of conflict. The Cipher Brief analyzes how humanitarian workers can overcome barriers to the production and supply of food aid by turning to a variety of new technologies in data analytics, imagery and mapping, urban farming, and more.

Counterterrorism and Human Rights: Egypt's Balancing Act

Since assuming office in June 2014, Egyptian President Abdel Fatah el-Sisi has been a staunch counterterrorism partner for the U.S. Yet, ISIS and other militant groups continue to roam the Sinai Peninsula and regularly conduct attacks against the Egyptian military and security personnel stationed in the area. The most infamous terrorist incident in the Sinai occurred in October 2015 when ISIS' Sinai affiliate bombed a Russian passenger plane, killing more than 200 people. The Cipher Brief examines the effectiveness of Egypt's counterterrorism strategy as well as how the terrorist threat in the country has impacted Egypt's economy.
