TOKYO -- As Japan's population
declines and its labor shortage
worsens, foreigners are increasingly
filling in the gaps.
The country's non-Japanese
population had climbed 7.5% at
the start of
2018 from a year
earlier, with growth seen in all prefectures except
Nagasaki.
The trend is particularly
evident in Tokyo, where 10% of 20-somethings
were born somewhere
other than Japan.
