TOKYO -- Japan will continue
to be the sole non-nuclear
-weapons state allowed to use plutonium for
peaceful
purposes after its nuclear
cooperation agreement with the
U.S.
renews automatically on
Monday.
Without a new pact, the
agreement forged three
decades ago could be
terminated
by either side with six months’
notice, a state of affairs
that leaves Japan in an
“extremely unstable situation,” according to
Foreign Minister
Taro Kono.
Other countries have protested
the country’s so-called plutonium
exception, with China arguing
that it creates a path for a nuclear-armed
Japan.
