In a wide ranging conversation at Asia Society in New York on Monday, Hillary Clinton’s chief foreign policy advisor, Jake Sullivan, discussed U.S. strategy in Asia and the Middle East. He said that China has not fully lived up to its responsibilities as a world power, and that Clinton’s presumptive opponent, Donald Trump, has been wholly inconsistent on his foreign policy. “He’ll say on the one hand, the Chinese are eating our lunch,” Sullivan said. “And on the other hand, we have all the leverage in the world to make the Chinese do exactly what we want.”

Chinese investment in American commercial and residential real estate has exploded in the past five years, but growth over the next five is poised to be even greater, according to a new report by Asia Society and the Rosen Consulting Group. Even as China experiences economic turbulence, this trend looks set to continue and boost the U.S. economy in the process. “There have been very few negatives so far from this wave of capital directed at the property sector,” said one of the report’s authors.

Last Saturday at Asia Society in New York, the dhalang Ki Midiyanto performed Déwa Ruci (Bima's Spiritual Enlightenment), a show of traditional wayang kulit Javanese shadow puppetry. Based on the stories of the ancient epic, the Mahabharata, wayang can range from the highest expression of classical performance to slapstick comedy, including sly political commentary on the news of the day.
