※ Venue: Geumgang Seonwon, Idyllwild (Los Angeles), California (USA)
※ Presiding Seon Master: Ven. Seon Master Subul Sunim (Anguk Seonwon, Pusan/Seoul, Korea)
※ Ganhwa Seon 看話禪, “the Zen of examining meditative topics,” is an intensive Korean method of meditation, which involves generating a profound sense of questioning, or doubt (usim 疑心). It is analogous to koan practice in the later Japanese Rinzai tradition. It his type of meditation is widely practiced in Korea and is the primary focus of contemplation for most monks and nuns meditating full-time in meditation halls around the country. Seon Master Subul Sunim’s approach to Ganhwa Seon is adapted for shorter, intensive retreats designed for lay practitioners.
※ Number of participants: 50 people maximum
※ Participants: Professors, scholars, Ph.D.
students and advanced undergraduates, professional meditation teachers, and
serious meditation students in Buddhist or other religious traditions.
※ Fees: Free for professors, scholars, and students enrolled in college or
university. $400/person for all others. All expenses during the retreat
(including lodging and meals) will be provided.

Retreatants may also attend the 6th
International Conference on Ganhwa Seon, “Ganhwa Seon and Contemporary
Society,” held on July 17, 2017 (the day before the retreat), on the UCLA
campus. The conference is sponsored by the Institute for the Study of the Jogye
Order of Korean Buddhism (Dongguk University) and the Center for Buddhist
Studies (UCLA).

The Heidelberg Center for Transcultural Studies (HCTS) at Heidelberg
University is looking to appoint a full-time “Akademische/r Mitarbeiter/in”
(equivalent to Assistant Professor / Maître de Conférence) within its
Department of Buddhist Studies. The specialization and period are open, and
should complement the existing faculty, and fit with the research foci of the
Center. The appointment is initially for three years, with the option of
