I’d like to make you aware of the following job opening in Buddhist studies at
the University of Virginia. Note that we are advertising for two positions, one
at the assistant level and one at the assistant or associate level.

Associate Professor in Buddhist Studies
The Department of Religious Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at the
University of Virginia invites applications at the tenure-track Assistant
Professor or tenured Associate Professor level in Buddhist Studies. We seek
candidates dedicated to our mission and passionate about teaching and research
in a world-class institution. Candidates will be expected to teach at the
graduate and undergraduate level, and to provide service to the University,
Department, and professional organizations. Candidates must be able to conduct
original research in Buddhist Studies with a focus on one or more major Asian
region: South Asia, Southeast Asia, Inner Asia, or East Asia. Area of research
specialization is open. Deep familiarity with Buddhist Studies scholarship, and
the broader social, religious and intellectual contexts of the Asian region(s)
being studied is required, as is a strong background in the history of
interpretation and contemporary methods in religious studies, and other
academic disciplines as relevant. Strong proficiency in the relevant languages
is required, such as Chinese, Japanese, Newari, Sanskrit, Pali, Tibetan, Thai,
and so forth. It is advantageous, but not required, that a candidate have
interests in the fields of Contemplative Studies and Contemplative Sciences.
Expertise and interests in digital humanities, interdisciplinary and
inter-regional research and teaching, innovative pedagogies, and building
collaborative projects are also looked upon positively.
Priority will be given to applications received by October 15, 2014 in
selecting candidates for preliminary phone/video interviews, as well as
subsequent face-to-face meetings at the Annual Meeting of the AAR/SBL in San
Diego, November 22-25. However the search will remain open until filled.
The appointment start date will begin August 25, 2015. Applicants must be on
track to receive a Ph.D. in the relevant field by May 2015 and must hold a PhD
at the time of appointment.
