Buddhism and My Art

Well-known Thai-Australian artist Phaptawan Suwannakudt will give an illustrated presentation on her work and its development, with reference to the significance of Buddhism to her practice and imagery.

Phaptawan Suwannakudt trained as a mural painter in the workshop of her father, who was esteemed as one of the leading Buddhist temple mural painters in Thailand. She served as his apprentice from 1970 to 1981, while also graduating in 1980 from Silpakorn University in Bangkok. From 1984 to 1996 she worked as an artist and mural painter in Thailand, before moving to Sydney in 1996 to marry. In 2006 she graduated with a Master of Visual Arts from the Sydney College of Arts, University of Sydney, while continuing to exhibit in solo and group exhibitions both locally and internationally. Her work was in the last Biennale of Sydney, while the four-panel work Previous lives of the Buddha 1995 is on show in Nan Tien Institute's inaugural exhibition Inspired by Buddhism. Another work will be on show at the Articulate Project Space during International Women's day. For further information, see Phaptawan's website.
