In a discussion at Asia Society’s Asia 21 Young Leaders Summit in Hong Kong, retired U.S. General David Petraeus reflected on the “competitive endeavor” of life and compared the military surge he oversaw in Iraq to the 1993 Bill Murray film Groundhog Day. “It was just a grinding existence,” Petraeus said. “People think it must have been exhilarating to be involved in it, but I was just trying to get through each day.”

On December 4 in New York, Asia Society hosted a cross-section of prominent Filipino-Americans including a DJ, a restaurateur, a journalist, and a composer. Each described, in "story slam" style, the moment that changed their lives. Nancy Bulalacao-Leung, the principal of the Filipino-American Museum, says that Filipino-Americans are taking a higher-profile place in the American cultural landscape. “It’s our time now,” she said.

More than half the populations of Pakistan and Afghanistan are now under 25, a fact that can “either make or break a country,” says Saad Mohseni, chairman and chief executive of the Moby Media Group in Afghanistan. At the Asia 21 summit in Hong Kong, Saad and fellow Asia 21 Young Leader Faiysal AliKhan of Pakistan discussed how the creativity and boldness of youth can be harnessed to take on some of the region’s major challenges — if they’re not “stifled” by elders.
