Recent moves by mainland China to
control Hong Kong’s media and elections have raised questions about its
commitment to “One Country, Two Systems” — an arrangement China
negotiated with the territory and hopes to eventually invoke with
Taiwan. But analyst Yu-jie
Chen, speaking on an Asia Society panel in New York
last week, said that China’s Hong Kong policy actually has little
influence on the Taiwanese because "minds have already been in a
very different place than China wanted them to be."

Last September, Japan’s parliament
introduced new laws that would allow a broader interpretation of a
controversial pacifist article in the country’s constitution. Speaking
with Asia Blog,
analyst Thomas
U. Berger says that while this could theoretically lead
to Japanese forces participating in overseas combat missions, “it is
still difficult to imagine how this might come about. There is no doubt
things are changing, but they are changing very gradually and at a
cautious and deliberate pace.”

New York Times reporter David Barboza,
who won a Pulitzer Prize for reporting on a $2.7 billion fortune held
by relatives of Chinese Premier Wen
Jiabao, says that he never hoped to activate change by
writing the story. In an interview with Asia Blog, Barboza discussed
the eventual backlash he got from Chinese authorities over the
story, why he keeps a low profile on social media, and where his
opinion on the role of a journalist parts ways with some of his
colleagues.
