China up close

November 25, 2019

Xi's elite soldiers 'clean

the streets' of Hong Kong

When the gates abruptly opened
at the People's Liberation Army barracks in Hong Kong on Nov.
 16, and about 100 shaven-headed
 and powerfully built men sprang
out to clean the streets, a senior officer made sure to tell the medi
a there that it was a
 spontaneous act.

But there was nothing spontaneous

to what the PLA, the military
 of the Chinese Communist Party,
 did that day.

Some soldiers had "Special Forces" emblazoned on the back of

 their shirts, flaunting their
association. China made sure
the world knew that its elite
troops were now in
Hong Kong.
