China up close

October 31, 2019

Xi toys with leadership reshuffle at party

conclave

As China wraps up a key
 Communist Party gathering i
n Beijing on Thursday,
 speculation is rife that
President Xi Jinping may
initiate a leadership reshuffle, promoting some successo
r candidates to the
Politburo Standing Committee.

Such a move should help tame
 the criticism Xi has been
 facing within the party for
abolishing term limits for the presidency and refusing
 to promote a new generation
of leaders at the party's national congress in 2017.

But the line-up change could
be a diversion from the major
 issues the Chinese leader faces,
 such as weaker economic
 momentum, deteriorating
 relations with the U.S., and
 continuing unrest
 in Hong Kong.
