Speaker:
DR. TETSUDEN KASHIMA
Professor Emeritus, American Ethnic Studies Department, University of
Washington and author of Buddhism
in America: the Social Organization of an Ethnic Religious Institution.
According to Dr. Kashima, “religiosity” means “the beliefs, moral or
devotional practices and ritual observances and/or attendance at
churches or temples.” This symposium will explore the past, present and
future of Shin Buddhist religiosity as it has been developing in the
BCA, addressing questions such as: How did the history of the Buddhist
Mission of North America and development of the Buddhist Churches of
America impact the development of "Japanese-American religiosity?
What might this mean for the future of BCA and Shin Buddhism in
America? What are examples of how Shin Buddhist religiosity is connecting
to a growing social consciousness?
