CFP> Holmes Welch and the Study of Buddhism in Twentieth-Century China, AAR 2018
by Gregory Adam
Scott
Dear fellow scholars,
This year is the final meeting of the seminar "Holmes
Welch and the Study of Buddhism in Twentieth-Century China" at the Annual
Meeting of the American Academy of Religion in Denver, November 2018. Over the
past five years this seminar has provided a place for the discussion of many
critical issues in the field, as well as a venue for the presentation of
cutting edge work by scholars in the field. Some of these papers have now been
published in a special issue of Studies in Chinese Religion.
For this, the final year of the Seminar, we welcome papers
on any aspect of the life and work of Holmes Welch, as well as papers that
discuss topics relating to modern Chinese Buddhism or other fields connected to
Welch's work. We particularly welcome papers that are broad in scope and
suggest future directions for the field of Modern Chinese Buddhism in light of
Welch's legacy.
This year we will return to a traditional format, in which
each presenter will be given 20 minutes to present their papers, followed by
comments from a respondent and then general questions. The final section
of the session will be reserved for a discussion of the past five years as a
whole, and consideration of possible future directions for the field.
To submit a proposal, please log in to the AAR's PAPERS system. The
deadline for submission is March 1, 2018.
Please feel free to contact us should you have any
questions.
Sincerely,
Dr. Erik Hammerstrom, Pacific Lutheran University <hammerej@plu.edu>
