On Monday in New York, renowned
architects Tod
Williams and Billie
Tsien spoke with Asia Society Hong Kong Director Alice Mong
about heritage conservation through the lens of transforming a
colonial-era explosives magazine compound in Hong Kong into the
cultural and intellectual hub it is today: Asia Society’s Hong Kong
center.

Last week, the New York Public
Library released 180,000 digitized images from its collection. Among
them were rare colorized postcards from China in the early 20th
century at a time when foreign visitors began pouring in. The photos
give a rare look at everyday life in the country during the
transition from its last imperial dynasty to a republic.

During a 1972 tour, legendary rocker
David Bowie,
who died Sunday at age 69, became enamored with the work of Japanese
designer Kansai
Yamamoto. This began the incorporation of many
Japanese influences on his work, from “onnagata”-style androgyny to
the “kabuki” influenced makeup of his “Ziggy Stardust” alter
ego.
