The rapid urbanization of Asian
countries has led to a dizzying array of skyscrapers across the
continent, with many buildings imitating those found in the West.
Award-winning architects Tod
Williams and Billie
Tsien have tried to counter this trend with unique
horizontal designs that incorporate a building’s natural
surroundings. Speaking at Asia Society in New York, Tsien reflected
on transforming a historic explosives magazine compound into Asia
Society’s Hong Kong center: "The idea that there was something
so wild and untamed in the center of a city that seems so controlled
was really, really exciting."

Since Chinese President Xi Jinping
came to power in 2012, he’s mounted an unprecedented anti-corruption
campaign against both high- and low-level government officials, who
are euphemistically referred to as “tigers and flies.” Last week, ChinaFile
unveiled an interactive database of officials who have been ensnared
in the crackdown, allowing users to try to make sense of the campaign
and recognize trends based on region, sector, and relationships.
