In 1952, Mao Zedong suggested diverting some of southern China’s abundant water resources to the country’s arid north. Four decades later, the idea came to life with the South-to-North Water Transfer Project. But in the ensuing years, it has created new environmental problems and displaced many people. In a video published by ChinaFile, two filmmakers explore the implications of “China’s most ambitious engineering project.”
