Asians
Crazy
Rich Asians, the first
Hollywood film in 25 years to feature a majority Asian cast, is a
veritable smash, having earned $76.8 million since its release two
weeks ago. Back in April, Asia Society Southern California presented
director Jon
M. Chu with a Film Diversity Award at its annual gala
dinner following a brief presentation by two of the film's stars:
actor Henry
Golding and rapper/actor Awkwafina.
In this recording of his acceptance speech, Chu explains why people
should watch a romantic movie starring Asian actors.

Mapping
Xinjiang's 'Re-Education' Camps
The
government of China's Xinjiang region is holding ethnic Muslims en
masse at detention facilities the government is euphemistically
calling "education centers." Beijing alternatively denies
the existence of these facilities or downplays their carceral nature.
But Shawn
Zhang, a law student at the University of British
Columbia, has used satellite images from Google Earth and information
gleaned from documents he found online to provide a remarkable map of
places the Chinese government would rather keep concealed.
Zhang discusses how he got the idea to build the map in an interview
with Jessica
Batke of ChinaFile.
