Japan Update

Japan plans satellites

to monitor space junk

TOKYO -- Japan envisions
 launching satellites designed
to protect its assets in orbit from
 the growing thicket of space
debris and the satellites of other countries.

Expected to launch in fiscal 2028,
 the effort would represent Japan's
first satellites designed to monitor outer space.

Tokyo's current space surveillance efforts rely largely on information
from the U.S. military, and the
Defense Ministry's existing satellites
are used for such purposes as communicating with troops or an
early warning system.
