Japan Update

Tokyo Stock Exchange's

 big board about to get

a lot smaller

TOKYO -- The Tokyo Stock
 Exchange plans to tighten up
capital requirements for listing
on the first section in a move
that could boot up to about
1,500 components from the
top-level club.

Currently, a company needs
 a market capitalization of just
2 billion yen ($18 million)
to make
 it onto the first section,
now home to 2,131 components.

The plan is to raise the threshold
to 50 billion yen to 100 billion
yen as part of a wholesale
overhaul by the bourse to attract international investors.
