Re: QUERY> Did Buddhists stake something at wining debates?
by Steve Jenkins
Hello,Buddhist narratives, historians and hagiographers present debate as having very high stakes, which they often moderate from victory or death to victory or conversion. The stakes also often include institutional estates, personal property, endowments, shrines, the right to receive alms etc. It suggests a ritually sanctioned mechanism for kings to transfer power and resources between groups. There is some limited historical evidence that this was at least sometimes true. It was as if the Oxford and Cambridge philosophy departments had a debate where their entire endowment was at stake and politicians were the arbiters. One can see why debate training became so important and great debaters became powerful and wealthy.

All the best,
Steve
