NEW BOOK> Donald Lopez, "Gendun Chopel: Tibet's Modern Visionary" & book series launch "Lives of the Masters"
by Nikko Odiseos
I
am very pleased to announce the launch of a new book series, "Lives of the
Masters" edited by Kurtis Schaeffer, and its first volume, Gendun
Chopel: Tibet’s Modern Visionary by Donald Lopez.
This new book explores the life of the endlessly fascinating polymath and visionary Gendun Chopel (1903-1951). Prof. Lopez ties together many facets of Chopel's life as a philosopher, artist, poet, traveler, writer, and yogi. Given that the scope of the series spans millennia as well as traditions, having the first volume be such a recent figure may seem an unusual choice. However, Chopel’s story spans countries and traditions, and lays bare the faultlines between monastic and lay, modern and traditional, east and west, and thereby forms a highly entertaining, engaging, and inspiring story.

THE
SERIES
All
volumes in "Lives of the Masters" will offer engaging introductions
to the lives, works, and legacies of important Buddhist teachers, writers, and
contemplatives. These volumes will offer a gateway to better understanding of
these great figures and their times. It is my hope that many on this list
will find these concise but learned volumes appropriate for classroom
use.
We
look forward to the subsequent volumes about masters from across the Buddhist
world. We have a growing list of upcoming books by a superb group of
scholars whose subjects span the centuries and traditions of Buddhism.
The second volume, to be released in 2019, will be Thupten Jinpa’s volume
on Tsongkhapa. We plan to release multiple volumes per year
thereafter.
