Subject: New Evan Ellis article (English y Español): Covid-19 accelerates China's advance in a more distrustful world: Prospects for Latin America
To: r_evan_ellis@hotmail.com <r_evan_ellis@hotmail.com>
Dear Colleague:
Although I just shared my publication on the EU and Latin America with you last week,
I am writing now with my newest article, in both Spanish and English: “Covid-19
accelerates China’s advance in a more distrustful world: Prospects for Latin America.”
The article examines how the tentative PRC recovery from Covid-19, at a time
when the West continues to struggle with the health, economic and financial
implications of the pandemic, positions China and its companies to make
significant advances in global supply chains from bankrupt former suppliers, as well as by acquiring assets sold off by Western companies seeking to shore up their financial
positions, and by negotiating financing and other deals with fiscally challenged
Western governments (eg. Argentina). The article further argues that the advance
in China's position is likely to be accompanied by increased friction arising from
perceptions of the PRC role in the propagation of the virus, as well as clashes
between new Chinese owners, and local labor and communities in a Latin America
under greater economic, social and political pressures than ever, thanks to the pandemic.
The article begins with the Spanish-language version, and continues with the
English version. It is included here as a PDF file, and is also available on the
website of RedCAEM, which published it: (if this link becomes divided
between multiple lines, please paste the entire link into your web browser).
