QUERY> Identification of a Yuan-period location

by Matthew Kapstein
Dear friends,
The colophons of several surviving Yuan-period prints of Tibetan Buddhist works name the place of execution as "ka'u lang ho'i sde chen po", that is, the "great district, or possibly monastic community, of ka'u lang ho," evidently a transcription of a Chinese toponym. One suggestion I have received is Gaotangfu 高唐府, in Shandong. In this case, the first and third syllables pose no problem, but Ch. tang > Tib. lang I'm less sure of. Moreover, I can find no evidence that Gaotangfu was an important site of Buddhist, much less of Tibetan Buddhist, activity under the Yuan.

I would be most grateful for any assistance that may forthcoming to resolve this conundrum.

best to all,
Matthew
