President Obama will visit the demilitarized zone dividing the two Koreas on Sunday, a senior administration official said Tuesday.
A presidential trip to that symbolic site was reported in the South Korean press last week, citing diplomats in Seoul, but Tuesday was the first time that the administration confirmed the visit. Obama will also deliver a speech Monday at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, the official said.
White House press secretary Jay Carney said last week that a trip to the DMZ "would be reflective of the president's commitment to both security on the Korean Peninsula and the need for North Korea to live up to its international obligations.”
George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan all visited the DMZ during their terms.
