What does the Presidential Committee for Unification Preparation need to prepare? The 81-member group, which includes 30 academics and eight cabinet ministers, was launched on July 15 and had its first formal meeting on August 7 with President Park Geun-hye in attendance. The second meeting, a workshop, was held in early September, just before the Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) holiday period, to discuss medium and long-term plans for the committee. It is difficult to judge the committee after only two months, but I can`t help but feel frustrated when I hear about its initial activities.

Linda Hoaglund

Greetings!

The 1950s have become something of a lost decade in historical recollections of postwar Japan, and while U.S. foreign policy continues to be actively opposed in certain parts of Japan, the vigorous grassroots protests against the first security treaty have all but fallen into a black hole of memory. As a complement to her award-winning documentary ANPO: Art X War, Linda Hoaglund looks back to this tumultuous decade as part of her contribution to Visualizing Cultures, examining Japanese paintings that critically and memorably engage the political struggles of the time.

What are the lessons of Fukushima for the future of nuclear power in earthquake-ridden Japan? At a time when the Abe government is pressing for restarts in the face of deep public opposition, Nassrine Azimi reflects on the issues and options following a recent visit to some of the hardest-hit localities in and around Fukushima three and a half years after the triple disaster. "Years (and billions of yen) could well be spent shifting topsoil, but would any young family be willing to raise kids there?" she muses, from the wasteland of localities that may never be repopulated.

Our second distinguish storyteller today will be Jean Ellisen. Jean lives in Berkeley, not far from here. She says she has been telling stories all her life, but on purpose for more than twenty years, in schools, libraries, campfires, festivals, in Fiji (where she was a Peace Corps Volunteer), and is a veteran storyteller at The Asian Art Museum, where she collected stories to be told by the corps of storytellers in many of the galleries, and the for special exhibit from Mongolia a while back. She is a long time supporter, and member of the Storytelling Association of California, and organizing committee of the Bay Area Storytelling Festival. Her passion is helping others, young and grown to find their voice through storytelling.

The main story she will tell this time is a folk tale about how the Horse Head Fiddle (i.e., Morin Khuur, in Mongolian) came to be. It is a story Jean shared with countless visitors to the Genghis Khan exhibit at the Asian Art Museum. A second story (time permitting) is a riddling tale of clever observation that averted a revolt, called "The Golden Dolls."
The event will take place at SRH on Sunday (sic!)  November 2, at 1-3pm.
