Over the next 40 years, thanks to increasing life expectancy and decreasing fertility, Japan is poised to see the proportion of citizens over the age of 65 climb from 25 to 40 percent. Meanwhile, as deaths outpace births, the overall population is expected to shrink from 127 million to 90 million. Ahead of a July 15 talk at Asia Society Hong Kong, Oxford social scientist Roger Goodman spoke with Asia Blog about some of the implications of this unprecedented demographic shift.

As newsrooms in the West struggle and downsize, India’s media is mirroring its economy with continued growth in viewers, income, and influence. According to Times of India columnist Santosh Desai, who speaks at Asia Society in Mumbai on July 15, despite some positive points, India’s media marketization has damaged objectivity. Too often, he says, journalists are supporting “muscular nationalism” and promoting their own self-interests.
