Ex-Japanese PM to Lecture at Seoul National University

Yukio Hatoyama Yukio Hatoyama
Former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama will deliver a lecture at Seoul National University in early November. This is the first time a former or incumbent Japanese prime minister has lectured at the prestigious university.

SNU invited Hatoyama to give a lecture marking the 70th anniversary of Korean independence from Japan. Hatoyama apparently accepted, expressing a wish to "converse with young Korean intellectuals."

Hatoyama visited Korea last month for a ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and toured the Seodaemun Prison, where Korean independence fighters were jailed and tortured.

At one point, Hatoyama knelt in respect for those who were killed by Japanese police during the occupation of Korea from 1910 to 1945.

An engineering graduate of the University of Tokyo, Hatoyama earned a PhD at Stanford University and started his political career in the Liberal Democratic Party but later became one of the founding members of the Democratic Party of Japan.

He became prime minister for a brief stint in 2009.
