AAR> Yogācāra Studies: panels, business meeting, elections, social event

by Joy Brennan
Dear Colleagues,
Please make note of the following panels and events sponsored by the Yogācāra Studies Unit at next month's annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion in San Diego. More information about each panel, including the list of panelists and paper abstracts, can be found in the program book on the AAR's website:

1) Yogācāra and Vedānta in Modern Chinese and Indian Thought
Saturday, 3:30 PM-5:00 PM; Convention Center-2 (Upper Level West)

2) Text Discussion Panel: The Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra
Saturday, 5:30 PM-7:00 PM; Hilton Bayfront-Sapphire P (Fourth Level)

*The primary focal point of this discussion will be chapter six, or the "Reality" chapter of this text. Some of the discussants will also reference other passages. We have compiled a set of documents including Sanskrit, Chinese, Tibetan and English translations of the text. We recommend that you read the relevant portions ahead of time, and print and bring the translations to the panel. You may find the documents here:

3) Cheng weishi lun across East Asian Yogācāra: Philosophy and Tradition
Sunday, 5:30 PM-7:00 PM; Hilton Bayfront-Aqua 303 (Third Level)

4) The Yogācāra Studies Unit Business Meeting will be held immediately following the Text Discussion Panel on Saturday evening at 7 pm.

5) The Yogācāra Studies Unit will once again organize a happy hour for scholars of Buddhism, on Saturday night at 8pm (right after our business meeting), at one of the hotel bars around the convention center. We will email updated information about the location by that Saturday afternoon. We thank the Mangalam Center for their financial sponsorship of this social gathering. Be sure not to miss this event - the only Buddhist studies party at the AAR!

6) Finally, the Yogācāra Studies Unit will be electing one more member to our steering committee by an online ballot early in 2020. We are accepting nominations for this position. Please write to either of us with a nomination.

Looking forward to seeing you in San Diego.
