Japan Update

November 5, 2019

Smart museums

Japan alliance

TOKYO -- From couriers letting customers know when the
deliveryman is nearby to
wheelchairs that detect stairs,
consumer services linking smartphones, sensors and
electronics can be created
in one day when a platform
 proposed by Toshiba launches
 next spring.

Toshiba, wireless carriers
 SoftBank Corp. and KDDI,
and utility Tokyo Gas are among
 the roughly 100 Japanese
companies expected to join the "internet of things" platform.

Backers see the initiative
 combining existing technologies
in new ways, such as sensors that
 start offering guidance when
 museum visitors are detected
 and houses that activate lights
and air conditioning at the turn
 of a key.
