Since the Arab Spring began in 2011, the destruction and trafficking of antiquities in the Middle East has reached new heights as terror groups like the Islamic State rampage through the region. The triennial Kumbh Mela Hindu ritual hosted as many as 100 million people at its most recent observance in 2013 in Allahabad in northern India — all in a makeshift city that was built and torn down in a matter of weeks.
