Asia's Struggle for a Free Press

The spread of populist, authoritarian governments have threatened press freedom across Asia: The prominent Filipina journalist Maria Ressa was recently arrested for, in large part, her critical reporting of the Rodrigo Duterte regime; in Myanmar, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo languish in prison after reporting on military atrocities against the Rohingya people.

In a recent presentation delivered as part of Asia Society Policy Institute’s “AsiaX” series, Natashya Gutierrez, editor-in-chief of VICE Asia, explored the causes of eroding press freedom in Asia and explained how journalists like her support democratic societies across the continent.

How Will Crazy Rich Asians Change the Entertainment Industry?

The blockbuster success of Crazy Rich Asians and the popularity of shows like Fresh Off the Boat and Master of None has eliminated any doubts that entertainment powered by Asians and Asian Americans can appeal to a broad audience. Do these success stories represent a paradigm shift in how Hollywood receives diverse storytellers?
At this year’s Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, film producer Janet Yang and writer/directors Lulu Wang, Justin Chon, and Richie Mehta discussed this question and more at a panel discussion organized by Asia Society Northern California and Asia Society Southern California. Hear their thoughts in the latest episode of the Asia Abridged podcast.

Building a Sisterhood of Asia Wonks

Think tank panel discussions in which every participant is male are so notorious that they’ve acquired their very own portmanteau: manels (all-male panels). These events don’t just offer audiences a limited perspective, they also keep qualified female policy experts from achieving wider exposure of their ideas.
In the latest episode of the Asia Inside Out podcast, three Asia-focused international affairs professionals — Lindsey Ford of the Asia Society Policy Institute, Anna Fifield of the Washington Post, and Lauren Rosenberger of the German Marshall Fund, discuss ways to promote gender diversity, relay their own efforts to elevate female expertise, and reflect on the role mentorship has played in their own professional development.
