In the documentary Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness, filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy tells the story of a Pakistani teenager who survived an “honor killing” at the hands of her father and uncle after getting married against their wishes. In an interview with Asia Blog, Obaid-Chinoy discusses the film’s reception in her native Pakistan and why she feels it’s her duty “to address issues that people do not want to discuss.”

Last week, U.S. Ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy stopped by Asia Society in New York to help kick off its new Kamakura exhibition, part of the Season of Japan. Dressed in a kimono, Kennedy recounted several examples of exchanges between Japanese and American students in New York. "It’s our job to make sure that those alliances continue," she said. "This alliance between the U.S. and Japan is one of the most important in the world."
