Japan Update

Pension 'whale' blows

past Japanese equity investment target

TOKYO -- The Government
 Pension Investment Fund,
known as a "whale" for its
 outsize influence on the stock
 market, is shifting focus after
exceeding its 25% allocation
target for Japanese shares for
 the first time. Having helped
lift stock prices on the way to
this benchmark, the GPIF is now less likely to drive gains than before.
