The American Academy of Religion (AAR) Buddhist Philosophy Unit is accepting panel and paper proposals for the next annual meeting to be held in San Diego, Nov. 23-26, 2019). The deadline to submit proposals is March 1, 2019. All proposals should be submitted through AAR’s PAPERS system: https://papers.aarweb.org/content/welcome.

The Buddhist Philosophy Unit (BPU) sponsors sessions that focus on specific philosophical topics, on methodological issues, or on (a) recent publication(s) in the field (books, papers, etc.) or a classical text of particular importance. Sessions representing a diversity of methods to address a regionally-defined topic are also encouraged.

The BPU considers individual paper proposals, but mostly encourages thematically integrated panels. The BPU has a particular interest in panels that include graduate students and junior scholars as well as proposals that would be suitable for co-sponsorship with another unit. If proposing the latter, please provide suggestions for co-sponsorship when you submit your proposal.

Panel sessions are 1.5 hours, 2 hours, or 2.5 hours. Final determination of session length will be decided based on the number and types of proposals received.

During the recent annual meeting of the AAR the topics listed below were proposed. If you are interested in contributing to or coordinating a panel on one of these topics, please contact the person listed. You are also welcome to propose a panel or paper on any topic within the purview described above.

• Back to Basics: What is a Dharma?
(Pierre-Julien Harter, pjharter@unm.edu)

• Chinese Madhyamaka

• Ecology and Buddhist Philosophy
(Karin Meyers, karin.l.meyers@gmail.com)

• Is there Room for Zen Philosophy?
(Tao Jiang, tjiang@rutgers.edu)

• Philosophical Dimensions of Buddha-fields
(Leah Kalmanson, kalmanson@gmail.com)

• Praxis and Philosophy
(Renée Ford, Renee.L.Ford@rice.edu)

• Sūtras and Philosophy
(Paul Hackett, ph2046@columbia.edu)

• Two Lions Fighting: A Tibetan Debate on the Two Truths
(John Powers, john.powers@deakin.edu.au)

If you have any questions regarding a proposal, please contact the BPU co-chairs, Karin Meyers (karin.meyers@ryi.org) and Tao Jiang (tjiang@rutgers.edu).

Sincerely,

Karin and Tao

CFP> AAR Panel on Vision and Visualization in Tibetan Buddhism

by Catherine Hartmann
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
I invite all who are interested to apply to be part of an AAR panel in the Tibetan and Himalayan Religions Unit called "Vision and Visualization in Tibetan Buddhism."
This panel explores Tibetan and Himalayan processes of envisioning. Visual perception is not simply a passive, receptive experience but rather actively involved in processes of artistic production, ritual performance, meditative imagination, and textual interpretation. With the goal of highlighting new approaches to any and all aspects of visual culture, we seek papers that investigate how visual experiences have been generated, interpreted, or adapted in any period of history.
Note that while the official call for papers gives the title "Vision and Visualization in Tibetan Tantra," we welcome people focusing on non-tantric materials!
Please contact Kate Hartmann (chartmann@fas.harvard.edu) or Eric Huntington (erhuntin@stanford.edu) for more information. We're hoping to have abstracts by February 15th.
