Tokyo's bars and restaurants

stay open despite

coronavirus curbs

TOKYO -- Tokyo will keep
 restaurants open with limited
 hours during Japan's monthlong
state of emergency, in an
 about-face prompted by
pressure from the central
 government.

Barber shops and hardware
stores were to be closed but
will now be allowed to operate,
 along with batting cages and
driving ranges.

The city planned to ask for a
wide range of closures, but the
 central government objected,
citing the impact on the 9
 million-plus residents.
