China Up Close

May 15, 2020

Haunted by a phantom, Chinafights a modern-day siege

In 1901, China's Qing dynasty was forced to pay 450 million tael of fine silver, several times more than the government's annual budget, to theEight Nation Alliance -- the U.K., U.S., Germany, France, Italy, Russia, Japan
and Austria-Hungary -- plus Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain,
as compensation for the Boxer Rebellion -- the failed anti-foreigner,
 anti-Christian uprising.

The obligation was passed down to the newly established
Republic of China,
sowing the seeds of deep resentment remembered even by
later generations.

The modern-day chorus of criticism against China over the
roots of the new coronavirus conjures memories of that
traumatic
experience at the dawn of the 20th century. But China
 today is
the world's second-largest economy and a global power
feared by others. The world watches the next steps closely.
