Japan Update

A shaken Asia awaits

America's midterm

verdict on Trump

NEW YORK --
Asian countries including
Japan will closely watch
Tuesday's midterm congressional elections in the U.S., where gains
 by the opposition Democratic
Party would embolden detractors
of President Donald Trump to
 push back against his policies
in the region.

For Tokyo, a divided government
 in Washington could sap
 momentum from upcoming
bilateral talks on trade.

Japan will also be watching
how flipping one or both
houses of Congress to the
Democrats would influence
 the debate over restricting
U.S. trade partners from
engaging in currency interventions
or entering into trade deals with
China, with which the Trump administration is locked in a trade war.
