Winners and losers in corporate Japan: Deft marketing pays off

TOKYO -- Twelve industry
leaders in 36 Japanese corporate sectors
 tracked by Nikkei fell from
 their perches over the past
five years, making way for
contenders that figured out
how to skillfully market their
goods and services.

Komatsu replaced rival
machinery builder Mitsubishi
Heavy Industries as the
industry
 leader in terms of net
profit,
while video game company
 Bandai Namco Holdings
dethroned Dai Nippon
Printing in miscellaneous manufacturing.

The companies that emerged
as new leaders distinguished themselves by creating business
models that fit changing business climates. In addition to offering
good services and products,
they are adept at marketing.
